I purchased Design for How People Learn by Dirksen with very high expectations. She didn't just deliver, she exceeded them. This book is the "full package." It relays very helpful information about designing curriculum with great images and interesting science. But Dirksen's content is often funny too, making the educational experience of reading her book actually fun. I am suggesting this book to everyone I come across who wants to design better learning experiences, whether in education or health care.

I am a lead instructional designer for a medium size business and have been designing e-learning, hybrid learning, and face-to-face learning for over 10 years. And I cannot recommend this book enough!!! It is perfect for ANY designer, whether you are just beginning or are an expert in your field. I bought this book to see if it could help my newer designers and I am picking up tips that I have forgotten about or never really thought of before. It is a great refresher for those who have been designing for years and a clearly written book for those who are a novice to the industry. If you are an instructional designer or are even thinking about designing, buy this book!

I had to buy this book for a class, but it is unlike any textbook I have ever used. I actually enjoy reading it! I would even consider reading it for fun, it's that good! Not only is the information in the book absolutely fascinating (just read chapter four. I will never think of memory the same way again!), but it is presented in a way that is humorous and engaging. I wish Julie Dirksen could write all of my textbooks!

This is one of the most concise, readable books on instructional design that I've ever read. I have a Masters in Education, I have dozens of books on learning design and development, and have been developing online learning for many years, but this book very effectively collects all the information you need to design learning experiences of all kinds. I really like how she breaks out (and explains!) the various kinds of learning we're trying to induce, suggests strategies for creating appropriate learning interactions for them and then gives examples. Kudos!If I were teaching a course on instructional design to students or colleagues, this is what I would use for a textbook. It's short, accurate, well illustrated (in color) and above all, fun to read! I wish I had this while I was in grad school.

I read the book from beginning to end. Now I just need to do what learning designers try to do for learners and put into practice what I’ve learned. There are great takeaways throughout the book. It’s not rocket science so not everything is new and complex. It’s a reminder of many key fundamentals that often get swept aside by bad habits, lack of time, working under pressure and a lack of leadership commitment to training. That doesn’t means we shouldn’t always be doing our level best to create great learning designs that impact results which is how we overcome those bad habits and earn leadership commitment.

First, I have to admit that I didn't make it past the first chapter. I flipped through the other chapters but only really read the first.The information is based on research and talks about the research but the graphics are so annoying and add absolutely nothing. I checked a number of times, first reading the written information then looking carefully at the graphics to see if there was any information contained there and there wasn't. It's as if the authors think you won't read any information unless you're entertained by pictures. I found it very distracting and couldn't continue. I'd be very interested in a version of this book without the graphics so I could focus on what the text is saying.

Here are a few examples:• In most learning situations, we assume that the gap is information. But having information doesn’t accomplish anything by itself. Something is accomplished when the learner uses that information to do things.• To determine if something is a skill gap vs a knowledge gap, you need to ask just one question: Is it reasonable to think that someone can be proficient without practice?• A lot of learning projects start with the goal, rather than the problem. That puts you in a position of solving problems people don’t actually have, while failing to address the real issues.• Sometimes it’s not a learning problem, but rather a problem of communication or leadership. Recognizing those instances can save a lot of time going in the wrong direction.• Your job is to make your learners feel smart and capable. You need to give them a safe path into the material.• If you can figure out a way for more experienced learners to use their expertise to enhance the journey for others, they will have a whole different level of engagement with the material.• Just say no to learning objective slides at the beginning of the course. Use a challenge, scenario or a “mission” message to focus the learners’ attention and let them know where they are headed.I know I have started to adopt some of these practices that I had not yet been using, and it’s made a world of difference in helping me to create learning that really sticks, every time.This book is perfect for anyone who designs learning programs of any kind. Although the book is intended for those of us who create adult learning programs, I think teachers with students of all ages can benefit immensely.

Very insightful look at religious priorities. Donniel Hartman writes of the importance of recognizing that we must be aware of others in our world and that they have worth. We cannot be lost in overdedication to God. We are all part of the human race, with worthiness and abilities, as well as the need for respect. In this current age of increasing tribalism, his advice is very well placed. This book is well organized and should be read by all who are concerned with humanity. It would be especially worthwhile for our politicians and extreme fundamentalists of all persuasions.

Too often people have a difficult time with applying scripture written 2000-2700 years ago to today's world. Well that is the problem, it, the Bible is very old and conditions have changed enormously. Therefore if we take every thing literally, as the word of God, or as the author says put God first, we find it very difficult to reconcile the Word with the needs, customs, mores, sensitivities of an ever changing and growing world. We are doing what the Bible implies is required of us, in extending the benefits and freedoms of society to many different parts of our society. We are bringing "The Other" in from the cold. We come up against Biblical prohibitions in the stated "Word of God or God Himself "in doing this holy work.As the author maintains we have to go" beyond the law" and follow Deuteronomy 6:18 "and do what is right and good in the sight of God". It is a long standing tradition in Judaism that in the Old Testament ( Hebrew Bible) you can't change or alter any letter or symbol , but you can wall or "fence" off that which doesn't apply or hampers one in following Deut. 6.:18. Another popular filter in Jewish theology for determining whether an argument or scripture passage is worthwhile pursuing or discussion is whether that would be for the sake of God or only for man. So Jews for a long time have been practicing Rabbi Hartman's ideas and approach to God and His Word and the results have been transformative as long as we follow" to do right and good in the sight of God".I like his idea of characterizing the problem or "autoimmune illness" as God Intoxication or God manipulation. The former is when we become "drunk or infatuated" with God and can't see the good beyond. The latter is when we Manipulate God in our self interest an invoke a "Them or Us" mentality. As another reviewer said this is very similar to Rabbi Jonathan Sack's in his book " Not in my Name" in explaining where violence comes from and it is not God but misusing Him in furthering a "Them or Us'' condition.I have not quite finished the book which is very short (less that 200 pages) and I am going slow to better absorb the material and compare to my other readings and my own experiences in Bible study, but I did see several references to the "Not in Heaven " passages of Deut. 30.11-14 in which God in his wisdom releases us to interpret the Bible for ourselves in our times and not go to Heaven for all the answers, even if the answers would be more accurate there. We would lose too much of who we are as partners of God created in His image.To achieve this perspective and approach to life we may have to "Put God Second" to avoid the autoimmune diseases of Intoxication and Manipulation and Follow Det 6.18 and 30.11-14As I finish this wonderful book look for my additional comments. This journey with God is fascinating and so rewarding and He is so open to our discussions and interpretations and understanding. We are true partners created in His image in the ongoing work of creation.

This book was recommended by the rabbi of my temple. He raved about it so I figured that it couldn't hurt to read it. It simply blew me away...to such an extent that I have arranged to have the author fly down to Florida and speak to our congregation. I have been conflicted my entire adult life about the real meaning of Judaism. In addition and more importantly, I have been struggling how to get my head wrapped around the concept of radical Islam leaders gleefully committing murder in the name of my same Abrahamic monotheistic God. This book actually explains via a thorough dissection of Jewish history how such a conundrum could possibly exist. FYI--although I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.....I REALLY loved it when I began reading it a second time! For anybody who finds the subject of religion or faith interesting-- or simply wondering why we are HERE, it is a must read. Also, although I rarely ever purchase hardback books today, I wholeheartedly recommend buying the hard copy instead of the electronic version, since you will probably want to make annotations that you will want to refer to later.

Everyone of all religious faiths should read Rabbi Hartman's profound and very readable book. He basically deals with why religious people often don't live up to the tenents of their faith. I'm not going to try to summarize the author's thoughts, but they remind you of Lincoln's quote that "it's not whether God is on our side, but whether we are on God's side." Rabbi Hartman's discusses why even religious people fail ethically in real life, starting with Biblical times and running through Israel's wars and the terrorism of the 21st Century. He gives the reader thoughts on how we all can do better ethically. Not to be missed.

A contemporary theologian tells the truth about the failure of traditional theology. He points out that the major religions, whether Christian, Muslim or Jewish, have spent more effort in aggrandizing their own purity than aiding the downtrodden. His thesis is that we should shed our indifference to the needs of others, and focus less on ourselves and our relationship to God. It's about time someone said it.

In an age where so many drafting functions are all done on computers, this is an increasingly rare guide to how to do many of these things by hand.I had picked this up on the advice of a gent who was an editor of a woodworking magazine for decades. I was looking for something to improve my approach to basic multi-angle and isometric views of woodworking design sketches. I have some background in digital imaging but I was deliberately looking for manual drafting techniques that could be updated with a pencil and eraser in the woodshop as exact measurements changed and others needed correction.The title calls it "basic" and some of the introductory bits are but also it goes into extraordinary detail on some fascinating representations of complex real-world objects. It covers everything from simple graphs and charts, to lettering on diagrams, to extraordinarily detailed views of machine tooling.

This rating doesn't have anything to do with the book - it came in great condition - my problem was I ordered two books and only got one. Understanding things can get mixed up in transit (or whatever), I waited a month or so before sending an email asking about the book. I was hoping to get a quick response but never got one (I think?). It is what it is. Anyway, this is an awesome book for anybody looking for an introduction to drafting standards/methods; I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about a starting position in the technical/mechanical drafting field. The book offers a lot of great visualization exercises that involve different follow-along practice methods for complex modeling.

The book arrived on time and for that I have no problem, the shipping service worked great. My unhappyness results from the book not being complete. During a recent classroom session we were directed to turn to the appendix, imagine my dismay when the appendix was not in the book. A further review of the book revealed several of the photos were not present and in place of the photo "FPO" in place of the graphics.

I have drawn many of the projects in this book, and it is a good reference too, yet it seems to be a workbook. Tear the pages out and put them on your drawing board.

This book is an excellent reference for anyone needing an introduction to or a reference for technical drawing. Most of the content concerning machine component drawings are geared (no pun intended) more toward traditional methods for technical drawings (i.e. compass, ruler and pencil), but the methods given are well suited to modern computer-oriented methods of solid modeling. Engineers in the manufacturing industry will find it especially useful, as it can be a helpful reference for weldment drawings.

It's great in depth technical drawing book. Sure, it's old but hey some information stays current for very long time, and this is one of them.Funny thing that copy I got have authentic homework that's 21 years old. It was graded 91% and was handed in at 1993.

What a great book. 8 years after it was published I bought it and I love it. There are 159 pages of gorgeous images and projects to do that have really opened my mind to the amazing possibilities of all kinds of felting. I have been needle felting and I am working on nuno felting but this covers all the fun stuff in between and also a part on needle felting. The projects are so fun and her instructions really are easy to follow. She doesn't just show you a gorgeous image then leave you hanging on how to accomplish it. I took some pics to show you because if you are like me, you really like to flip through a book before buying and these days that is getting way to hard to do. I wanted to go crazy and kind of did so there are quite a few images but I take 159 like I wanted to. I did take 12 images and apologize that the contents page had a horrible glare. I hope it helps I've you in your decision making process, personally I think if you like felting flowers or purses or journal covers than you need this book.

I own 8 felting books but if I had to give up 6 of them this is one of the keepers. Finally here is a book that doesn't insult one's aesthetic with cutesy projects that seem more suited to preteens. Instead the author showcases great designs with a very clear idea from start to finish of what you need for a project, what will be entailed to finish it and great photos all along the way. The basic technique given at the beginning will serve you through out the book and should be memorized - or copied, enlarged and put up on your wall until you have it committed to memory. The list of resources is fantastic - except there is no "Balfour Farm" as is listed. Another great felting book to have is "Feltmaking and Wool Magic" by Jorie Johnson, which is much more comprehensive but not as user friendly as the photos are small.

Thorough and complete in every category - this book on feltmaking will get everyone interested in felting to explore one or more of the ways to develop quality felt products. The projects provided in the book are great and tempting to do - perfect for those wanting to learn the subject. Plus the dynamic colors used in nearly every project add to the inspiration provided by the author. Get this book and maybe one more if you can only afford a few books on the subject...and remember, other authors may focus on one technique to the exclusion of others, while this author does not. So perhaps, choose this book first and then find another book, more advanced perhaps, in the felting technique you like best. But don't forget, this author includes some unique advanced projects to sink your felting activities into! Excellent!

I borrowed this book from a friend and started 2 of the projects (the purse and the bowl). I didn't finish yet and used the book and got it a bit messy so i bought a new one for the friend I borrowed it from. More pictures and more specific directions would have been nice. (What materials to use as templates and clearer pictures of netting. I bought hard plastic for the purse template then realized i needed to roll/agitate in the bamboo. Had to start over with a flexible template. Used old xray film.)

Good variety of projects and techniques. Covers everything I wanted to know about felting and then some. Found quite a few projects that I would actually like to make. This book has easy to follow step-by-step instructions and a lot of good ideas.

I own several felting books and this one is the best. The book offers step by step instructions and techniques for a beginner or advanced felter. Gillian gives us information on the history behind the wool process which I found very interesting and and never boring. I loved her simple instructions on the process of wet felting. Each page is so well photographed and the projects are so clear and colorful they jump right off the page and you become inspired immediately. A must have for anyone interesting in learning felting or in need of new inspiration.

I purchased this book not really knowing what to expect and what I got, to my surprise, was awesome! It's a well written book, beautifully photographed, with very nice inspiring projects. Super colorful! Great variety!! Ideal for all skill levels and the projects are categorized in the book that way. I always find that very helpful when trying to determine which project to attempt first. What a great book!! It's a keeper in my library! Not a moments regret here at all!

Can't say enough good things about this book!!! The projects are cute relevant useful and don't require a laundry list of supplies to complete. My one suggestion would be more step by step photos of the beginner and intermediate projects.

I never read the first edition, but the second edition includes a lot of practical information that anyone serious about using Cisco gear for networking should know. To summarize, the book covers (and the chapters generally follow):* WAN technology and components* AAA for access control* Asynchronous (modem) and ISDN connections* Frame Relay and traffic shaping* Dial backup* Queuing and compression* NAT* Broadband* IPSECThe new content is a much needed update. Anyone seeking to learn or crystallize their knowledge on these topics would do good to read this book. I own the Cisco "IP Quality of Service" book, but actually prefer the information in BCRAN because the information is presented in a simpler way without all the (excessive?) underlying theory.The IPSEC chapter could have been written with less meandering. I ended up writing a one page cheat sheet of notes detailing the steps while removing all the intervening verbage, and it made it much clearer.Mileage will vary with the information on asynchronous connections. The examples in the book required a fair amount of tweaking to work on the router with 12.2 IOS I used.The book's proofreading is middle road at best, but fortunately most errors are fairly obvious. Cisco should direct more effort to proofreading - this is only one of several recent Cisco Press books published with the typo affliction. I would have given the book four stars if there were less errors, especially since most are obvious.Overall, this book will teach you what you need to know!

How does an abhorrent piece of study material like this even make it past the editors? I know that if I was an editor, I would NOT want my name associated with this book. Just go to the Cisco Press website and take a look at the 42kb errata file. There is a correction on almost every other page it seems! Please, save your money and your time and look elsewhere for study material. This book will more than likely cause you to fail the test rather than pass.

Material is good but is missing stuff. Cisco should be ashamed with the ammount of typos. Check out the typos here: [...] Without the typos I would have given it a 3 maybe 4 stars. Needs to be updated.

This is a very disappointing effort by Cisco Press and I find it hard to believe that they had the nerve to publish it. In terms of content, this book is pretty comprehensive but it is littered with technical, formatting and editorial errors.My personal favorites are...Page 9. Apparently a BRI line has a bandwidth of 2.048 or 1.544MBps (This is actually a PRI line).Page 120. Editorial comment left in, reads as follows."pool" and "dhcp" should be italics. CP edit made.Regarding the command. BACKUP LOAD 60 5According to page 278, when the load on the PRIMARY line's available bandwidth falls below the second figure, the backup circuit will be disabled.According to page 279, when the transmitted or received load on the primary AND secondary lines is less than the second value, the backup circuit will be disabled.Incidentally, one of the questions on my exam asked which of these options was the correct one.After reading this book I don't know how far I would trust any of the content. For my next subject I will choose a different publisher, I would encourage others to do the same.

This version of the book is definitely missing key topics that are asked in the exam. For example, it does a very poor coverage of PPPoE in chapter 11. The RFC 1483 is never mentioned, which is a building block of PPP0oE and PPPoA architectures. Another example is QoS in chapter 15. Custom queuing (CQ) and priority queuing (PQ) are never mentioned which are favourite topics on the actual exam.My recommendation is to either use another resource, or ensure that you supplement it with online pdfs from cisco.com and practice tests.

The writing style is so lousy and unreadable, I shifted to the other CCNP BCRAN book (...)midway. Better as a finishing touch rather than as a starting point.

I should have read the reviews on this book before taking the exam...I missed it by 5 points, 785/790. That's less than 1 question.
