About the Author

The late James Stewart received his M.S. from Stanford University and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. He did research at the University of London and was influenced by the famous mathematician George Polya at Stanford University. While cross-checking my work I noticed that a problem was incorrect. So I called Cengage to them about the problem. They made a note about it and told me "We'll let the editor know". 15 minutes later I call them again to tell them that they missed an entire problem! On page 205 of this book you'll find that answer 11 is incorrect, and that the answer to number 23 is actually the answer to number 25. To make matters worse number 25 is actually the answer to 27! And then we get to their solution to number 29, a solution to a problem that doesn't even exist in the textbook.So if you do get this book, don't blindly believe everything it says. If you can't figure out how they got their answer it might be because they're wrong.Needless to say, Cengage will be receiving an angry letter from me.

I thought this textbook was "okay." Not the best explanations, but certainly not the worst explanations, and the website that you can purchase and do additional exercises is awful. They need to seriously revamp their online tools. Another book I used for College Algebra was very good...it took you through the steps and provided specific page number from the textbook and also gave an example online. When you submit your answer, you know if it's right or wrong immediately. This one does not do any of that. You just solve the problem and don't know til you're done with all of them if you got something right or wrong. Basically, the online tools were useless and thankfully, my professor did not mandate us to purchase that part.

This book is great, gonna use it in my review for calculus I. I've looked through this and compared it to many of the other textbooks that cover this topic and have to say this on par, even a bit better, than my previous per-calculus book. The best reason of why I like this textbook is the fact that it doesn't just present you with information and expects you to understand it like if you knew the subject already. It really helped through reviewing the tough subjects that I still struggle through even now. I highly recommend this textbook as a supplement and as a regular textbook. My only quarrels with this it that it's a bit small and was expecting it to be bigger from the images. and the colors are not to my liking, but that's mostly corrected with a cover for the book.

I really love this! It is an awesome book, with great exercises! Unfortunately I won't be able to keep it since I've just rented it. Hopefully I get time enough to go through all the chapters. :) Pretty heavy, don't think you will be able to keep it in your backpack because it will rip your body apart. Please have somewhere to study with it without the necessity of moving it too much.

I am currently teaching myself Pre-cal for fun. So far I am on chapter 1.10. The examples is pretty clear, as long as you follow their examples and do all the excises on the back, you should be OK. I do wish they could include all the answer keys and not just the odd #s, but I guess that's just a long tradition in American text book.My copy is a used, I bought for $9, I love it how I could just write on the book without worrying anything.Anyways, if you are serious about teaching yourself beyond 1 + 1, this book is for you.Oh, and btw, get yourself a lot of scrap paper, I found it usually requires you to use one whole page A4 size to perform the calculation for one question.

I don't really write reviews but thought i should for this. You could also call it venting. I'm a Senior in college who switched majors and PreCal is a prerequisite. I'm behind and now trying to catch up. I'm going through the first chapter, section 2 and already this book doesn't provide specific content/information for me to do certain problems/exercises at the end of the chapter. The answers doesn't come with any explanations so pretty much lost so now i need to seek out online sources, tutoring services, and probably a better book if i hope to pass this class.

Why would the rental period end early before school is out. Was charged a late fee, because my student needed the book until the end of school

this book was not that good. the solutions for the examples were not really explained that well if at all, whereas other texts explain solutions step by step, so you can actually learn something. this book was unreasonably difficult for no reason, just because it isn't explained well and its unclear. some of the answers in the back of the book were literally incorrect. i could't believe it. that makes studying difficult if the answers in the back of the book are wrong.
