My review of The Frog on the Wall by Jamie Terra Hawk. I begin my review with an admission that I know and admire Jamie a great deal. I met her earlier this year as we participated in the 2018 Women’s March in Rockford, Illinois. We met for the first time in the parking lot of the Church where she has been a long-time member. I learned some of her story during our walk to the starting point of the march and was left wanting to learn more. Her autobiography grabbed me at the first page and didn’t release me until I finished it. What a journey she has traveled! I submit that a great many people, when confronted with extremely difficult situations like those she encountered, would not have survived to share them. The “frog on the wall” metaphor is a perfect one, I think, and I encourage you to read this book if you are open to learning about some of the challenges that people encounter when they find themselves trapped in the “wrong” body.

This book is both poignant and difficult, a story about two people who care for each other so deeply that one gives himself up for the other. It’s also a story of redemption and transformation, but a transformation that is really a restoration. Perhaps what is most remarkable about Jamie’s story is its hopefulness amidst so much hurt and pain. Thank you for this book, Jamie.

Jamie TerraHawk weaves her complicated and unique life story in a combination of magic realism and beautiful simplicity that leaves a reader, no matter who they are, both uncomfortable and inspired: a sign of a book much needed in this time in America. From the first page, I was transfixed, with the reader naturally rooting for the author within her story and unable to stem off the feelings of anger at oneself and others, the somehow familiarity and relevance in this painful and awe-inspiring tale, and the desire to be better to oneself, to others, and to our Earth. This is not a fluffy, junk-food piece for the beach- the combination of included poetry embedded with heartbreak and raw vulnerability, the teachings of native wisdom, and the harsh reality that is told from an autobiography unaltered by large publishers pushing for a coat of sugar require all openness and attention that a reader can give- yet gives so much more in return. One of, if not the most, powerful books I have ever read.

What an inspirational story of survival! It’s not about “becoming” another person, Jamie already knew who she was this whole time. She simply needed her outward appearance to reflect that, and more difficult than that, others to accept it 😬.I can attest-She never changed from the person we all had always known: loving,patient, informative, supportive, funny, compassionate ......but hopefully after reading this book (or considering reading it), more changed about your willingness to follow who she has always been: an activist, and advocate. A father. A girlfriend. A wife. And how does that all fit together??? If you ask me? Perfectly. I can’t recommend this book enough.

Jamie Terra Hawk is a truly gifted writer. Her extraordinary story and courageous spirit demand attention throughout the entire book. Expect to be inspired! A must read!

A must read for anyone in the LGBT community, or who has a family member that is LGBT and who would like to understand what it is really like. I could not put the book down, even though I knew the outcome. Although some friends did not understand the analogy of the frog on the wall, it is explained in a later chapter. The book gave me a greater insight, and acceptance, to people who are not the same as myself.
