The book could have been a 4, IF it ended with him asking for and being assigned to another case... To get back on the horse, so to speak. A short story should be standalone, not a sales pitch for a different book. The psychology of the sniper in the moment was incredibly evocative of his books and style. It would have been an excellent short story, if it had just left it at that. And a 5-star, if it weren't for the whole "C _ A" section... that's totally transparent, felt like a teenager wrote it, and not worthy of Mr Baldacci. He's either a killer or he's not. He either works for them, or not. It's not what is going to say in his mind's eye.Once that piece was past, it settled into an excellent study into the mind of the government sniper with a twist.But to drag in the "it's personal" and referencing 3 external characters.... It's like a trailer to a new book, to get you to buy that book. Like a book jacket synopsis "You're a killer who just successfully killed a bad guy, but the cost of the collateral damage (an innocent killed with the same bullet) is too high. You're ready to go out in another case, when you find out that two of the important people in your life are fine (thank goodness) but, by the way, the dad you haven't seen in years is on trial for murder.... And that's the end of the story.I hate book series that leave you hanging at the end of a book mid-scene, waiting for the next book to be published to finish the book. This was a deliberate sales job, unworthy of Mr. Balducci.

Sort of a crime-thriller-meets-science-fiction-time-travel short story. The character was mean, evil, easily hated, and he received his comeuppance. I like it when bad dudes get justice. But not as good time travel as Heinlein or other sci-fi authors, and not as good a crime story as Baldacci usually produces. The basis for the ability to travel back in time is never believable here. I respect his effort, however.

Overall: 4 starsPlot/Storyline: 3 starsAlmost all the reviews I've read have been pretty negative, and so I had no idea how I would feel about the story. Some of this seems to have to do with the reviewers possibly being fans of the author, or at least knowing his name, but not particularly fans of short stories. Some of these reviewers dinged the story for not making it clear "why" the events happened, the motives of the character that set the plot on motion; I didn't think it was necessary or even expected in a story of this size. (These details can be up to the reader to supply. I don't think there are a shortage of people with motive.) What I do agree with is that, after a certain point, about mid-way, most people will know exactly how the story will end. From that moment on, the reader can only enjoy the other charms of the story, and continue on it order to confirm what he or she already knows.No Time Left had the feel of an old Twilight Zone episode. Perhaps this is another reason why I didn't need to know the exact why - because this tradition has always played on the reader's sense that there are forces at work, agents who usually dole out some form of poetic justice - with a twist. (Sometimes the tradition is about feeding on our worst paranoid fears, but that's another topic.) I felt like Frank Becker could have walked past Rod Serling at any moment. Of course, this leads me back to how old Twilight Zone episodes also have resolutions that are obvious from a mile away.Still, the story was pleasing to me. I think potential readers are more apt to enjoy this if they are fans of short stories. If the appeal is the author based on his longer works then there is a chance that they might be at least slightly disappointed. This is a simple story with few events and only one twist.Characters: 4 1/2 starsThe only character who matters here is Frank Becker. Again, some might mind that we never find out more about his newest client, but I find it to be a non-issue. Baldacci presents a very interesting character study and, in few words, hints at why Becker is the way he is - not the nicest or most popular guy.I do have to take something off since the first portion of the story is about Becker leaving nothing to chance and being brilliant, but he failed to ask questions at a key moment, failed - after we're told about his patience - to take a few minutes to make sense of things. Baldacci wanted us to see this guy as brilliant, but allowed him to miss important details. He sacrificed character for plot. This is a valid choice, but it's not one that he can make without it dinging characterization.Writing Style: 5 starsI found the writing to be interesting and crisp. I can see why the author is popular. I felt Mr. Baldacci told this story the best that he could, given the above issue of predictability and needed moment of character inconsistency. Within the structure and limitations of a short story, the author got across a good amount of information, both through direct exposition and implication.

DB has penned a very unusual short story about a young boy who grew up to become too flight contract killer. He is contacted to do a job in a small city that is approachable by train. After receiving his final instructions he board the train in 2017 and he wakes up in 1950. He finds the person whom he is to kill and does, but is t late to realize he had killed someone dear to him. This is an excellent read for the genre....DEHS

I had pre-ordered this and forgot about it until it showed up on my Kindle this morning. It's a pretty good short story, but I do want to emphasize the short: it took me about five minutes to read it. You can usually get a pretty good gauge of how long a Kindle book is by the size (in kilobytes) on the book description page, and I thought this one would be longer at almost 200 KB - it must be the graphics at the end advertising other Baldacci books.The story has an interesting little plot, but not much character development or interaction due to the length of the short story. However, Baldacci does a good job of getting you interested in the character - this really could have been the outline of a full-length novel, and I think it would be a good diversion for Baldacci as I really haven't liked his last two novels which appear to have been primarily written by others. You do have a pretty good idea of how the story concludes about 75% of the way through it.To summarize, this is a pretty good short story and Baldacci fans should like it. I did!

This is a ripoff. I was expecting a novel by Baldacci and instead got what is labeled as "Chapter 1" of "No Time Left", plus Chapter 1 of each of two other Baldacci titles. I've been a Kindle user for several years, and have occasionally ordered books that I didn't like for one reason or another, but this is the first time I've felt cheated. This offering struck me as being 3 advertisements for Baldacci books and even though the cost is minimal, I resent paying even $0.99 for advertisements.
