“A groundbreaking book and an immensely important addition to the entrepreneur’s reading list.” —STEVE BLANK, author of The Startup Owner’s Manual   “Evan Burfield’s book is required reading for anyone who wants to succeed in the Third Wave of the internet economy, where startups will disrupt massive industries and the policy framework that shapes them.” —STEVE CASE, chairman and CEO of Revolution LLC, cofounder of AOL, author of The Third Wave   “Large corporations can throw their weight behind laws and regulations that favor them. What can startups do? Thankfully, Evan Burfield has some answers.”—BETH COMSTOCK, former vice chair of GE“Evan Burfield explains why Silicon Valley’s distaste for government and government-regulated markets is misguided. Bringing these markets into the twenty-first century can have enormous positive impact on people’s lives—and provides the next great opportunity.” —TIM O'REILLY, founder of O’Reilly Media, author of WTF?: What’s the Future and Why It’s Up to Us  “I’ve seen too many startups fail because they aren’t prepared to deal with regulation, while just a few succeed by finding ways to collaborate with government. Here, finally, is the book that gives entrepreneurs the knowledge, tools, and inspiration they need to navigate the messy world of regulation.” —JONATHAN ORTMANS, president of Global Entrepreneurship Network

As an entrepreneur and someone who is generally interested in both government and start-ups, I find this book to be incredibly useful. Burfield doesn't just walk the reader through how startups can navigate regulated markets, he tells stories that bring the concepts to life. If you are starting a business in a regulated market, this book should be required reading. But the lessons in Regulatory Hacking are broad and deep, so I'd recommend Regulatory Hacking to anyone who finds it interesting to contemplate the intersection of government and business at this unique moment in history. Enjoy!

So many industries now are being disrupted by innovation and technology but increasingly this comes with calls for more regulation. Usually the industries that most need disrupting are those that are already regulated as they affect individuals in a crucial way. Some companies ride straight over regulators, asking for forgiveness not permission (and sometimes not even that). Even if the intention is to work within regulatory frameworks it can be impossible to know how to succeed as a business in these industries. Evan Burfield explains how to go about entering highly regulated industries with success using great examples and case studies. His experience in building companies himself, and incubating them at the 1776 hub and seed fund, combined with his understanding politics and the public sector framework mean the reader gets a truly unique and nuanced perspective that would be difficult to find elsewhere .

I was excited to get my pre-order of this book. Burfield does a great job at walking through the practical aspects of starting/scaling a company in a regulated industry, but rather than feel like a textbook he uses case studies and storytelling to bring you through the core concepts.I think the book is perfect if you are addressing regulated industries, but is also a great read for any startup entrepreneur who is interested in the founding stories of the same great companies of this decade.

Well written, timely, and on point. Burfield's sense of reality is honed by being a critical node in the successes (and failures) of so many startups. In an era when it's increasingly difficult to discern truths due to obfuscating marketing copy, this book is a pleasant return to sanity. Those that heed this handbook will likely find themselves in position to capture value.

This book is one of a kind. While there are numerous books that discuss business planning and startup journey, Regulatory Hacking is unique in that it seamlessly transitions between the startup journey and the challenges of government regulations. It gives entrepreneurs a competitive advantage. It teaches us how to run a startup while leveraging the complexities of government to their highest potential.Regulatory Hacking should be part of every entrepreneur's reading list.

As a startup founder in the clean technology space focused on water/sanitation, this book has been HUGELY useful for us as it both articulates, and provides solutions to, the unique challenges of being a new company in a heavily regulated industry like ours. Could not recommend it more highly!

This book charts out the playbook for entrepreneurs looking to make headway selling to government and regulated industries. As someone who has spent more than a decade working with companies to build their go-to-market strategies for government, Evan nailed it.

Regulatory Hacking is a practical as well as interesting book. Evan does a great job of using stories of startups to illustrate actionable steps for businesses that need to navigate regulations at the city, state and federal levels.
