Captain Marvel decides a change of scenery and a recommitment to service is in order when she takes a two-year posting as commander of an orbiting space station. Designed as a proactive deterrent to future galactic excursions, the good Captain is expecting a life of adventure, but finds only a bureaucratic nightmare as her first big assignment is renegotiating the facility’s waste management contract. Thankfully she’s saved by the arrival of an ancient spaceship filled to the brim with dead bodies, followed by a second ship with a decidedly more alive, and violent, crew.RISE OF ALPHA FLIGHT is a decent enough time-killer, but not particularly exceptional. I did like the sci-fi horror overtones presented by the initial starship, and would have liked to see this volume continue in that vein. It takes a pretty quick detour into more traditional sci-fi action, though, but at least presents some neat ideas along the way. What keeps this from being a better read is that the story itself feels stretched across more issues than it really needs. The art isn’t particularly good either, presented more like an amateurish cartoon. There’s not a lot of detail to the images, but a few of the splash pages come across nifty enough. There’s some good character work, at least, and the presentation of Puck and a burgeoning friendship with Captain Marvel is pretty entertaining. The science officer, Kawasaki, is also a fun addition to the crew. Other members of Alpha Flight, though, are given little chance to distinguish themselves from the background. As to why this Canadian super team is now living abroad on a space station...who knows?Probably the best word to describe this volume as a whole is inconsistent, and even the editing is pretty shoddy with missing words or repeated words (there’s at least one instance where “the the” crops up in one dialogue bubble, perhaps to make up for a missing “the” in a previous bubble...). It’s not great, but it’s also not terrible, as it finds some kind of middle ground between those two ends, feeling a heck of a lot like a lesser episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

I've never read any Capt Marvel comics, before, but I liked this comic book. Each of the characters have a well-defined personality and sense of humor. I thought the story was interesting. Without having any context of this character at all (or even Alpha Flight, if we're being honest), I was still able to enjoy it. I do feel, though, that people that are familiar with all of the characters' back stories will likely enjoy it more.

Alpha Flight and Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) are characters who have routinely struggled to find an audience. This is due to a variety of factors but they're both characters with niche fandoms (including myself). So, combining the two is hardly a bad thing even if I'm confused at how the Canadian superhero team has ended up as the sole defenders of Earthspace. I'm also of the mind that Alpha Flight isn't really Alpha Flight unless it has either of the Hudsons. Still, if you're just going to have Puck, Sasquatch, and Aurora then you haven't lost much. The premise of the first six issues is basically Marvel Comics version of Deep Space Nine with Carol running Earth's newest space station. Agent Brand of Joss Whedon's X-men plays a role as constantly undercutting Carol's authority and serves as an excellent foil for her. The plot of the issue, though, is Carol attempting to make peace with a race of alien refugees who are fleeing from the genocide of their world by the Kree. They believe Carol is a Kree (half-Kree actually) and that Earth is full of Kree that must be destroyed. She just wants to peacefully resettle them. It's a very Star Trek-esque plot and one I strongly approve of.Overall, the trade is...okay. Not great but I appreciate a depiction of Carol as a peacemaker and diplomat versus her less than stellar handling in Civil War II.8/10

I enjoyed this story a lot. often, kelly sue deconnick struggled with quickly developing an exciting and interesting plot. the art is not my fave but the series has had far worse.i did not know alpha flight was already a thing and was not therefore dissapointed by their depiction. the humor was good and this new setting is promising. fun read, cant wait for more

Fantastic and intriguing storyline with a perfect pace to the narrative. Great character moments sprinkled throughout. Carol and Alpha Flight go together like peanut butter and chocolate.

I enjoyed this book very much. It wasn't overwritten and had a great array of artistic style. Character development needs help though.

Kid loved its!!!

A very enjoyable read, it gave me a "Star Trek" vibe. I wasn't a Captain Marvel fan before reading this trade, but it really made the character and Alpha Flight appeal to me.
