I took a two week trip to Israel with this book as my go to guide and I found that it was way too thin on information to be my only resource. Luckily I had a data plan for my phone and was able to look online for information that this book was lacking. My biggest peeve was that it gives almost no background and story to the places you visit. It touches on most of the highlights but does not point out the details that better guidebooks do. While it tells you opening and closing times, costs to get there and to get in, etc it doesn't go too deep into the history of the places or give you maps and layouts to follow along. The text that it does include is shallow/For example, for our visit to Ceasera we found the book almost useless. The text seemed to have been taken completely from the pamphlet handed to us upon entry to the site. The same was true for Masada as well. Also, the book comes with a map of Jerusalem when it would have been much more helpful to have a fold out map of the country instead. The authors have tried very hard to write a book that can work for all religions and they try to touch on sites important to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. That is a lofty goal but the authors are not clear about which areas might be uncomfortable for tourists of a particular background. I found myself asking people around me whether certain areas were safe or not and was told in no uncertain terms where it would be best not to wander.I will probably look to other guidebooks for any future trips.

As is the case with all kindle versions of the Lonley Planeyt guides, the info they contain is par none...thourough, extremely helpful and insightful, everything you need to be prepared to get to know a place. Unfortunately, the part of the book you want and need the most, the maps, are completely orthless on the kindle versions. Tiny, non-scaling, unlabled, unreadable maps with about a thousand different things marked on them. I am a huge fam of eboks and the kindle, but travel guides are just not acceptabel yet. they need a new way to do the maps.until then, do yourself a favor and buy the printed version.

We've had varying levels of success with LP books in multiple trips, but recently they've been pretty poor. I find the explanations of sites to be extremely limited. I think their main problem is that they've chosen to put more things in at the expense of explaining a few things well. They'll tell you the 57 places you can see around Haifa, but for most you get one paragraph. I'm much rather see a page devoted to the top 15 sites. Also frustrating is the fact that there is no real rating system. Aside from their few must-see Top Picks, you can't tell what might be considered a really good site vs a potential let down or, more importantly, which are the things to see only "if you have some extra time".We also had a Frommer's book which was a little more helpful. I'd say buy that one, but can't say it is exceptional.I can only hope that future travelers will one day have the luck to have a Rick Steves' guide to locations outside Europe.

I bought this guide as an ebook and have no idea if the paperback version is better or the same. As an ebook being used during a trip to Israel, it proved too dependent on my having Internet access. Without Internet access, the maps were almost useless with details so sparse it repeatedly took me an hour or more to find recommended stops when I my searches originated within 1/4 of a mile of what I was seeking. Very frustrating. The ebook version contains only a few pictures. And descriptions never went deeper than the detail level the tourist brochures handed out for free or n entry to a site. This guide added next to nothing. Finally, the Kindle version accessed on an iPad presented a pathetic user interface that only added to the frustration. Towards the end of week 1, I started getting the hang of it which transformed the interface from useless to fixable to the extent I was willing to enter my own index references. Like I had nothing better to do while visiting Jerusalem or Masada.

As an old woman, I wasn't sure if I wanted to visit this part of the world. Friends and family wouldn't go with me. After reading the book, I decided this was a trip I COULD do solo. Detailed info on everything I had questions about. I planned on 5 days but added 6 more. After the historic spots I will be sleeping in a hut in the middle of the desert just to see the stars (private bathroom!), snuba (not a typo) in Eilat (see page 325), eating street food and knowing what's inside that sandwich... I will take time to enjoy a reasonably priced spa once in a while. I loved the book--no "canned" tours or cookie cutter hotels for me!

Read this before visiting friends in Israel. It gave me ideas about what I wanted to do (they were very gracious and wanted to show me the country). My friends were also impressed with my knowledge of the country - saying I must have really done my homework.

Good book with many practical details for traveling in Israel. Easy to use, easy to read. However, it makes one think that it is easy to visit the Palestinian territories and that is NOT the case.

Came a bit slow in the military postal system, but great book.
