I'm not a web developer so my review only applies to someone who just wants to understand the basics of javascript+php+ajax ... and this book is awesome for that.I wanted to write a web app which talks to the backend database throught webserver's php and then modifies information on client side using javascript. And i got me up and running within 2-3 days of reading it.The book explains the basics very well, thoroughly line by line explaining the meaning of each line.Personally i prefer books which dont assume that the reader already knows some of the technologies and this book doesnt do that.

I bought this book in an attempt to teach myself Javascript and PHP. It seemed like a good idea at the time, the name implied the possibility. I found this book to be pretty average. I haven't finished it yet but I still need to write this review. I completed the entire JavaScript section of the book, as per the reading, the coding and the activities, and only learnt that I keep making a lot of mistakes in my coding (oh and I have made a clock, sort of, WOW! - Sarcasm). 130 odd pages in and all I can say is I know what Javascript is, and sort of what its capable of but that's it. This book left me confused with a headache, and I still know practically nothing about JavaScript. I can kind of read the code now, but I still have no real understanding of the code's purpose as its written. I hope the PHP section redeems this book but I won't hold my breath. After the decent HTML/CSS book by this publisher (different authors) I expected a bit better.I realise that JavaScript is complicated (to me at least) and out of the 2 books I've read this was the better one, but I still don't know how. I found this book so unhelpful that I have ordered other books to try and salvage my attempts at JavaScripting and PHP.Also 130 pages to learn JavaScript40 pages to Learn PHPAnd 70 Pages of "Complex Ajax Technology"This book is way too short. My other JavaScript book, which is incredibly out of date is over 600 pages, and is only JavaScript. I will be returning to it (as complex as it is) to try and work out what I've wasted my time doing.Turn Back! Run Away! (from this book) It's too late for me!

Not impressed with the syntax errors in this book. It took me running some of the examples on three different browsers before I realised that the JS syntax was incorrect in some of the source code. This book/publisher doesn't even offer example (used in the book) source code for download from an external website, let alone CORRECTED download example source code. "Sam's" stuff seems to be a hair above the "Dummies" books - which no serious technical professional should touch.

I purchased this book and thought this would be the most updated book but it was very hard to understand the codding without the full explination and the software that came with the book was out of date and didn't contain all the codes from the book. The books targets straight to the code without much explination you would be so lost if you are a biggners or even an intermediate.

Sam's Teach Yourself Ajax, JavaScript, and PHP by Phil Ballard and Michael Moncur covers a broad range of topics, from HTML (but not HTML5) across the board to a server side library (called XOAD) and, of course, AJAX (intensive), Javascript (basic to intermediate) and PHP (albeit a cursory overview of PHP, delving into OOP for PHP by the third chapter dedicated to the PHP topic).(This book is best read with a foundation in HTML/HTML5, CSS/CSS3, and preferably at least a little bit of knowledge of PHP as the PHP section is not covered at the same depth as is dedicated to JavaScript.)With that said, there were at least two features of the book that made it absolutely indispensable for my library. For one, the book covers use of Amazon's REST API for capturing product info and implementing an Amazon Associate's ID for making passive income off of Amazon through book/product referrals from your site (p. 275). This discovery was tremendous for me as I had never encountered a developer's method for working with the Amazon Associate's program. And what better way to refine your Web sites than by making them compatible with a means for passive income?For another, the book shows you how to take a url for an RSS field, collect the XML, and list the titles and descriptions of the news items in your site by incorporating user entered RSS url fields (pp. 262, 265). Although the user needed to enter the RSS url fields, this book at least gives direction for implementing RSS feeds into a site--something I've been excited about learning but never encountered in any of the countless books I've read.Other great projects that this book offers include (1) building a script to grab the "keywords" metatag from the user entered url (p. 251), (2) using RICO (an AJAX framework employing the Prototype JavaScript library) for drag and drop advanced functionality without cross-browser issues (p. 322), (3) using Prototype Javascript library to build a simple stock price simulator that creates phony stock prices between $50 and $100 (p. 311), and (4) using Script.aculo.us library effects such as fade, appear, slideUp, SlideDown, highlight, and shade on specified elements, such as a div (p. 326). There were many more projects demonstrated in the book, but this covers some of the ones developed later in the book. (For interested readers, Larry Ullman's JavaScript book covers the making of a more sophisticated and real-implemented stock ticker--an advanced, meaty read.)Some of the other delightful components of the book include the code for (1) rounding a number to two decimal places (p. 136), (2) AHAH, which is simply an easier form of AJAX where you use straight text rather than XML in the response (p. 247), (3) assigning an image through innerHTML rather than straight text (p. 273), (4) making a utility function for XMLHTTPRequest function that is compatible in multiple browsers and that supports both post and get requests (p. 286), (5) implementing try/catch error management techniques (which is something I feel could be discussed more thoroughly in JS books in general), (6) escaping urls used in queries for get and post requests (p. 302)and (7) preventing cache of AJAX requests by implementing random variables in the get url. The Web based services covered in the book include SOAP (which is action oriented) p. 278 and REST (which is resource oriented--the one used in the Amazon service). Web based services can include, um, services that do things such as payment processing, weather forecasts and user authentication (p. 272).Some of the lists worth bookmarking that are discussed include listings of (1) document properties and methods (p. 75), (2) history object properties and methods (p. 77), (3) location object properties and methods (p. 78), (4) DOM properties and methods (appendChild, etc.) (p. 258, p. 261), (5) XMLHTTPRequest object methods and properties (p. 154).As a suggestion for the authors, should they consider a further addition, is to develop more discussion on the possibilities (with tutorials) on the server side script such as XOAD. For instance, I would love to know more about how chat and possibly gaming might be achieved through server side scripts (that store events on the clients computer onto the server, and thereby make these events detectable on other clients' browsers).All in all, this book was well worth the investment, especially as it excels at instruction (although on the counter scale, it is light on the actual JavaScript). Its value is in covering the basics while delving into some more sophisticated topics such as Web services, AJAX, and server side libraries. The biggest highlight of the book, already stated, is the focus on some indispensable scripts not readily available elsewhere.
